What Is Arctic and Northern Studies?

Arctic and Northern Studies is an interdisciplinary program at UAF that offers a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)
and Master of Arts (M.A.). Unique in the country, the program focuses on the study of problems and
policy issues specific to the Arctic and Circumpolar North. Drawing from multiple disciplines, especially
political science and history, students study climate change, Indigenous issues, national policies,
international relations, environmental concerns, history, social issues, culture, and arts related to
the North.

Students benefit from the extensive expertise and research activities of UAF faculty, the ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥
and Arctic collections of the UAF library and museum, and, of course, the fact of being surrounded
by the North itself. Arctic and Northern Studies faculty have won major awards for excellence in
teaching, research, and public service. Students will be a part of a growing cohort of people interested
in and concerned about the world’s fastest changing region.
