Shining Bright: Jaunelle Celaire Wins 2024 Edith R. Bullock Prize

The University of ĄÖ»¢Ö±²„ Foundation Board of Directors is thrilled to announce that Dr. Jaunelle Celaire, a distinguished professor of voice at UAF, has been awarded the 2024 Edith R. Bullock Prize for Excellence. This prestigious award, the largest single prize given annually by the Foundation, honors individuals who have made significant contributions to furthering the universityā€™s mission. Dr. Celaireā€™s recognition underscores her outstanding impact as an educator, performer, and musical innovator.

Dr. Celaire, originally from Canada, has dedicated over 21 years to the UAF Music Department as the Steve and Cynthia Holmberg Choral Director Endowed Chair. Her career spans a wide range of musical roles including teacher, soloist, conductor, and performer. Her international acclaim includes performances in cabaret, music theatre, solo recitals, and opera. According to Meg Nordale, Chair of the UA Foundation Board of Directors, ā€œDr. Celaire stands out as a very inspiring and talented professor,ā€ highlighting her ability to creatively share the joy and knowledge of music with her students and the wider community.

UAF Chancellor Dan White also praised Dr. Celaireā€™s profound influence, noting that her work has significantly impacted generations of students, many of whom have gone on to become leaders in the field of music. Her dedication is further evidenced by the successes of her students, who have secured professional positions in opera companies, internships, and teaching roles.

Dr. Celaireā€™s contributions extend beyond the classroom. She has been instrumental in fostering musical collaboration across the university system and statewide, including co-writing a grant for a collaborative opera workshop, organizing national anthem performances, and creating virtual carol performances for seniors during the pandemic. Her many achievements include directing the UAF Summer Music Academy and composing original songs for KUACā€™s Fall Fundraiser.

The Edith R. Bullock Prize for Excellence, established in 1989 through a generous donation from Edith R. Bullock, recognizes those who have made exceptional contributions to the university. This award, accompanied by a $20,000 prize, celebrates Dr. Celaireā€™s remarkable dedication and achievements.
