International Volcanological Field School
Katmai trip June 10-24, 2025 |
UAF’s Department of Geosciences offers a two-week field course in volcanology, in collaboration with the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) and the Kamchatka Branch of the Geophysical Survey (KBGS) in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia. The course is held every summer in both Katmai National Park, ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥â€”home to the site of the largest eruption of the 20th century—and on one of Kamchatka’s active volcanoes, such as Mutnovsky, Gorely, Tolbachik, and Karymsky. Students will explore and discuss the full spectrum of volcanic phenomena, examining some of the world’s best examples. The course is taught by Pavel Izbekov from UAF, with assistance from guest scientists from the US, Russia, Japan, and other countries. It is open to both UAF and non-UAF students with an interest in volcanology, geohazards, and petrology.
