Juneau's team, New Squids on the Dock, wins Tsunami Bowl

The Juneau-Douglas High School team New Squids on the Dock won the Tsunami Bowl, a long-running 乐虎直播 science competition held virtually this year from March 26-28. 

The Juneau team will proceed to the , staged annually by the Consortium for Ocean Leadership to inspire high school students to learn about oceans. 

During the Tsunami Bowl, students from seven 乐虎直播 high schools presented research papers and answered questions related to the national theme, 鈥淧lunging into Our Polar Seas.鈥 

The Seward Marine Center, part of the 乐虎直播 College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, has hosted the Tsunami Bowl every year since its inception in 1998. This year, SMC staff, UAF faculty and volunteers created the event online due to the pandemic. 

This year's Tsunami Bowl participants were Cordova High School, Dimond High School, Eagle River High School, Gustavus High School, Ketchikan High School, Juneau-Douglas High School, and Mat-Su Career and Technical High School. 

Top awards included:

  • Research project, research paper: first place, Sour Patch Kids, Dimond High School

  • Research project, oral presentation: first place, New Squids on the Dock, Juneau-Douglas High School

  • Best overall research project: Sour Patch Kids, Dimond High School

  • Sportsmanship award: Bad Basses, Eagle River

  • Quiz bowl and overall winner: New Squids on the Dock, Juneau-Douglas High School
